I was there. My most vivid recollection is actually how few of us actually were. All of these years I believed that show was a year earlier. I can’t imagine the band having ever played more than once up there, logistically speaking. Gardening at Night was the band’s performance that night. I knew then they were destined for greatness !
I was at this one also. It was a private party for the Numuzik Club which was “The Punk Rock Club” as we called it at Appalachiah State University in Boone North Carolina. We had heard the single with Radio Free Europe on it, so we had several parties an collected money at the door. Scott Whipple who was the head man (so to speak) in the Numuzik club somehow found out to how to contact REM and found that they would come to Boone and play at our party for $1,000. That fired us up even more since we really dug the single and had about worn it out.
Whipple then contacted P.B. Scotts since he was sure that we would need a place that large (since REM was killer). REM came an played an did a great job. The bouncers at the club hadn’t ever really seen a band like REM an when the dancing really started going they started grabbing people (to break it up I guess) an the gig ended early. All in all a hell of a night and a heck of a memory!
Later that night we all went to Whipples appartment on King Street and when Michael Stipe walked in the Cat who was standing next to me asked him if he would like to f**k his girlfriend, or something. After everyone stood there speachless for a few minutes, he then said “well can I get you a beer or something?”. Mr. Stipe replied…no…That’s all right.
The party lasted well into the evening as far as I can remember.
