Attended this show as a 16 year old youth. Some corrections for you, which I only offer as I was there
and remember the show well.
City is Binghamton, not Binghampton, and it is New York (NY) not New Jersey (NJ). The venue
is also properly known as the West Gym; it had not been called the Men’s Gym since the early 1970′s.
During the encores, “Just A Touch” was not played – rather, the tune played in this spot was an
improvised and obviously spontaneous attempt to play “Tusk” by Fleetwood Mac.
I remember this because M. Stipe began the tune by singing part of the chorus as the last chord of
“Rockville” was ringing out, also while looking at the other members of the band with a
smile on his face. The obvious intent was to just have fun with the tune.
The rest of the band joined in and they made it through a couple verses before the performance
fell apart. The group walked off and then returned a moment later for another set of encores.
The review in the SUNY paper the following week also made the mistake of thinking this was some new
original called “Touch.”
The show was notable for being rather loud due to the gym’s echo-laden acoustics, and
the Neats played an atrocious and not very well-received set. REM brought the house down.
